New Canvas features from 26 August 2017 include:

  • Doc Viewer updates
  • Speedgrader performance updates
  • Accessibility improvements

Doc Viewer Updates

Point and Area Annotation Comments

Point and area annotations do not require text comments to be saved. If text comments are made, they can be added to the annotation like other annotation types. This feature can be particularly useful if a teacher would like to highlight and/or pinpoint a repeated issue throughout the assignment, only writing the comment once.

Downloading annotated assignment

The marked assignments can be downloaded for later use or record keeping.

Speedgrader performance updates

SpeedGrader has been optimized for performance in large courses and includes an increased submission threshold per student submission. Previously averaging at 800 submissions, the current minimum threshold has improved to 1500 submissions. Assignments with more than 1500 submissions may result in delayed SpeedGrader loading times.

If the course has more than 1500 submissions and Speedgrader times out, an error message will be displayed.

Accessibility improvements

The Submit Assignment button is read as a button to screen readers. When a user opens an audio comment, a focus outline is placed around the comment.
