Using group discussions for peer feedback

Discussions are a great option when students are working in groups. Group discussions allow students to discuss a topic, ask questions, or upload a file for other members of the group. A group discussion is private to group members.

Graded group discussions can also be used to assess a student’s individual contribution through the use of peer feedback. Providing a rubric allows a structured approach to gathering this peer feedback.

A couple of things to note however: Peer reviews can only be added as part of a graded discussion and unlike peer review assignments, discussions cannot be assigned anonymously. Also unlike assignments, students using graded discussions can only complete peer reviews for discussion replies made by other students in their group, not for students in other groups.
